Description

This Bible belonged to Charles Dickens Uncle and was then Anne Dickens. There are 4 pages of family records written in the section devoted to this in the Bible. There are numerous separate paper including the citizenship document of Charles Dickens Fathers Brother and the marriage certificate of Anne Dickens. There is a neat poem title "Friends" that this handwritten and unsigned and a nice handwritten copy of the "Star Spangled Banner" that is unsigned. There is a drawing of "Benjamin Franklins House" by Charles Dickens little nephew. According to the date on the bible and in the entries in it, this Bible would have been in the home when Dickens visited America and stayed in his Uncles home in Philadelphia. Since he did not like America or Americans at the time and did not socialize during this visit it seems very likely that at some point during his visit he would have read this Bible. It is probably that this Bible would have been prominently displayed in the parlor. The bible itself is in fair shape with some spotting and discoloration and the binding is fragile. The last few pages are missing as well. The bible was used until the turn of the century and gives an interesting view of this corner of the Dickens world. What is interesting to me is the fact that Charles Dickens Uncle was a very successful businessman in American and did not want it to be known that he was the Uncle of the writer of those trashy novels. This Bible contains important historical information and documentation.
