    Description

    We are offering a
    RARE
    January 23, 1868 issue of "
    The Pacific",
a San Francisco Congregationalist Newspaper, edited by Reverend George Mooar, pastor of Oakland's First Congregational Church.  We assume this newspaper was Rev. Mooar's personal copy, as his name is written in pencil at the top of the paper.
"A Family Newspaper, devoted to Religion, Education and General News: under the control of the General Association of California."
The newspaper's motto was, "First Pure, then Peaceable - Without Partiality and Without Hypocrisy".
This issue has an article on the Supreme Court decision of
    The People vs. McCreery,
a case as to whether private property taxes should be applied to church property and whether or not church property should be considered "private property".  The newspaper has great advertisements for products and services of the day!  It has another interesting article on the remedy for intemperance.  It also discusses the interpretation of the Bible, stating that Catholicism was in decline and Protestants were on the incline.
    Reverend George Mooar (1830-1904)
graduated from Phillips Academy, Williams College, and the Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts.  He left Andover and moved his family to Oakland, California in 1861.  Mooar became the first pastor of Oakland's First Congregational Church, became associate editor of the Congregationalist newspaper "
    The Pacific"
in 1863, and president of the Pacific Theological Seminary in 1872.
From what we have been able to gather, Congregational Churches are made up of Protestant Churches that independently run their own affairs.
The members are led by the Spirit of God rather than being led by a creed or strictly defined belief systems.  They follow the leadership of Christ and are bound to others by love and faith.
Based on what we have read, we have come to believe that the Congregational Church worked closely with other Protestant Christians consisting of Episcopalians, Methodists, and Presbyterians, as active evangelists spreading the gospel domestically and in foreign lands.
CONDITION: The newspaper is in Very Good Condition for its age.  There are a few tears, mostly on the folds, some of which have been repaired with clear archival tape.
**NOTE: The newspaper has 4 pages with printing on both sides (for a total of 8 pages).  When the newspaper is unfolded, all 4 pages are actually printed on one large sheet that measures 46" x 32".  In other words, the newspaper is not printed and cut the same way most newspapers are.  It does not open up the normal way.  We wanted to make the buyer aware of this so they will open it up carefully to avoid any tearing.  Hope this makes sense!
