The Straits Settlements were a cluster of British colonial territories in Southeast Asia originally established in 1826 under the control of the British East India Company, and subsequently transferred to the control of the British Raj in 1858. Yet later, in 1867, they were placed under direct British control as a Crown Colony. Following the Japanese Occupation and then the end of the Second World War the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganization of its colonial dependencies in Southeast Asia. The Settlements originally consisted of the individual settlements of Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Dinding. In 1886 Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands were added. The island of Labuan, off the coast of Borneo, was incorporated into the colony in 1907. Most of the territories are now part of the nation of Malaysia, except for Singapore, which established itself as an independent nation in 1965. The Cocos Islands (a.k.a. the Keeling Islands) were transferred to Australian control in 1955, followed by Christmas Island in 1958.
The coin has been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as having almost uncirculated (AU) details, though because the coin was cleaned the NGC will not assign a numeric grade.
