Heraclius is considered one of the greatest of all Byzantine rulers so it is odd that he is not called Heraclius the Great. He created large military zones called themes that extended over the whole empire and formed the backbone of the Medieval Byzantine state. He drove the Avars out of Constantinople and utterly defeated the Persian Sasanians. In the closing years of his reign he witnessed the 1st expansion of Muslim power.
Heraclius Constantine, also known as Constantine III, was son of Heraclius and his 1
    st
wife Eudokia and became co-emperor with his father in 613, with his brother from 638 and for 4 months alone in 641.  In 629, he entered into an incestuous marriage with his cousin, Gregoria and then married his niece, Martina the same year.  Their daughter, Manyanh married the last Sassanid King, Yazdgerd III.  It was rumored that his stepmother poisoned him, but now historians are certain that he died from TB.
