Brass Cumberland Jack, QV
Half Guinea gaming token. Although dated 1837, these tokens were also produced after that date. The token is about
23 mm across, and weighs about 4.1 g.
The Obverse features QV facing left, and the Lettering reads: H. G. M. QUEEN / VICTORIA.
The Reverse depicts a man on horseback, a three-headed dragon, and the Legend reads: TO HANOVER / 1837.
This 19th century British gaming counter or token, often called a “Hanover Jack” or “Cumberland Jack,”
has an interesting history. The Kings of England, starting with George I, were also Duke or King of Hanover and Elector in the Holy Roman Empire. When Victoria became Queen in 1837, the German law (
Salic Law) did not permit a woman on the throne of Hanover. Her uncle, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and fifth son of George III, became King of Hanover. These Tokens are said to represent the Duke of Cumberland departing from England on horseback, riding over a one, two, or, in this case, a three headed dragon.
