The rose is one of the most frequent charges to be met with in heraldry, and the
similarity between the conventional heraldic rose and the wild rose of our hedgerows is
quite apparent. There can be little doubt that its popularity as a heraldic charge is due
to the fact that from Plantagenet days it has been one of the Royal badges, and whilst in
early days its adoption was no doubt indicative of adherence to the white rose of York
or the red rose of Lancaster, in more modern grants of arms association with one or
other of those counties will account for its choice. The arms shewn are those of a family
of Smythe, Baronets.
