    Description

Circa 1875. This brass token measures 21 mm and weighs 2.15 grams.
In 1873 William Owen opened a draper’s shop in Westbourne Grove, employing just two sales assistants. By 1888 Owen had expanded his store and employed 350 staff.
The store was situated directly opposite William Whiteley's department store, and by now Owen was regarded by Whiteley as his main rival. Despite this, the two men cooperated in trying to attract more customers to the neighbourhood.  In the 1920s the William Owen department store had expanded to over 60,000 square feet of floor space and employed over 700 sales assistants.
