ENGLAND, Stuart, James I, Half Groat (2d), mm PLAIN CROSS (1618-1619), S.2660ASpink No. S.2660A (sort of)
----
This is a rare coin in my opinion, specifically referencing the data from the Trial of the Pyx (Symonds, 1912; British Numismatic Journal) which indicates that a mere 9s2d were included in the trial of the pyx for the Plain Cross mintmark (June 9, 1619). Assuming coins were placed in the pyx during minting at a similar rate throughout the reign of King James (to put this in perspective), the 1st bust Thistle pyx had 129£ 15s 3.5d. Additionally, it is noted in Spink that 2660A has the legend on both sides as
TVEATVR ∙ VNITA ∙ DEVS
, but mentions the mintmark is Plain Cross over Book. This coin has the same legend on both sides but I believe it to just be the Plain Cross mintmark, and therefore not entirely accurate to call it S.2660A. I am parting with this coin because it is a duplicate in my collection. It has likely been cleaned, and I would wager was a metal detecting find at some point given the condition. Overall, what I believe to be a rare opportunity to add this to your collection. Please note that the above stated research is my own, and these are my own opinions - please assess the coin yourself prior to purchase.
Note
: This coin is ungraded, this is simply the way in which I have housed some of my collection with a custom slab/label (which can easily be opened and removed, as it is not sealed). I will send in the slab unless directed otherwise.
