When ordering, please specify scent(s).Lemon, peppermint or lavender. It's here! After numerous requests over the years, I have created an all natural consumer product for my odor removal method!
I have been buying and selling vintage fabric, as well as old linens and vintage clothing since 2003. These items typically come from estates, sometimes thrift stores and garage sales. A fact of this business is that odors are a thing! It may be something very strong like cigarette smoke, mustiness, air fresheners or pets. Or something as simple as a different smell than our own house. YES everyone's home has a distinct smell! Even the cleanest home on the planet smells like SOMETHING! And often times simply washing these items still leaves the smell behind. It is also very common that NEW clothes off the rack have a certain smell and let's face it, we all buy and wear clothing before washing it from time to time. Wouldn't it be great to have it ready to wear in only 30 minutes? Rather than wash/dry/iron?? Also true for VINTAGE clothing.. it always needs freshened up!
Over the years I have fetched old fabric from the eaves of attics surrounded by things like coal dust, mouse poo, raccoon urine.. I have bought totes of fabric from damp musty houses and homes of smokers with stinky fabric softener sheets layered between the fabric. I have bought fabric and textiles from old farm estates that have sat in storage a long time because we all collect more than we will ever use and one day our hands won't work as well as they once did but our minds are still hopeful because that creative neuron in our brain doesn't ever go away. I have scooped up countless closets full of dusty old clothes and coats, many that had hung on the same hanger for decades.
Once upon a time I walked away from stinky fabric, clothes and textiles. But sometimes, in the thick of a crowded auction, especially when everything has been brought outside, the smells don't hit your nose until you've brought it home. Much like going to that amazing stir-fry restaurant that cooks at your table and everything is sumptuous until you get home and your favorite coat now reeks of garlic and grease.
So, I started experimenting, drawing on my 20 years of running a cleaning business when my body was younger and stronger, and I came up with a method that allowed me to save all these amazing pieces and my vintage fabric shop DodOddity grew! Nothing but rave reviews and delighted customers to have found these amazing fabrics! ALWAYS clean and fresh, NOT ONE negative review or return.
A Grammy Whammy starts with a reusable cotton waffle-weave dish cloth. This is a reflection of my love for vintage kitchen linens.. these dish cloths, among other things, are highly absorbent and will come to you soaked in my all natural solution that not only deodorizes but also disinfects.. because odors are caused by bacteria! Removing the odor comes from removing the bacteria. This is NOT a cover-up. It contains no perfumes, no dyes, no chemicals. It is ALL NATURAL. Along with other key ingredients, a Whammy uses natural lemon, peppermint or lavender, all of which have disinfecting properties. A SLIGHT fragrance might remain but typically will fade, leaving a neutral smelling item. Again, I have ZERO complaints regarding any smell to my fabric. (OK, I have ONE complaint, from a bag of scraps that I did not treat..)
Here's how it works.. It is always best to wash the items first.. (one Whammy will treat a medium load of clothes/fabric). This is because if there is soil or excessive odors, the dryer (where the Whammy does its magic) may lock in those stains. A Whammy is not designed to clean, it is designed to remove odors. Simply use your regular detergent and wash as normal. Then open up one Whammy and place in the dryer with the items and run the normal dry cycle. Do NOT wring out the Whammy. Dryer sheets to control static are fine to use at the same time, however unscented is recommended. The goal is to remove odors and not cover them up with a fragrance.
For delicate items, a Whammy can also be added to your home dry cleaning bag, with or without the manufacturer cleaning cloth. Cleaning and deodorizing can be done at the same time! 30 minutes on low typically does the trick! What a wonder this is for a recent haul of vintage clothes!
To simply freshen, as in the case of the smelly restaurant (as long as the item is not soiled) or department store smells, place dry/unwashed items directly in dryer or home dry cleaning bag with a Whammy and dry on low for 30 minutes. This is also great for removing wrinkles, as this method operates on the steam that the wet Whammy creates. If using this method on vintage clothing, be sure to spot clean any stains first. Your customers will love receiving fresh smelling clothing and it is a huge time saver to not have to wash/dry/iron before listing.
Other deodorizing suggestions.. stuffed animals, quilts fresh from summer storage, bed pillows, etc.
PLEASE NOTE... do NOT use a Whammy on leather, suede, fur, or any other item that requires a specialized cleaning service. Moth balls and mold are tricky odors.. both will intensify when wet. These items should be aired outside in the sun for several days before attempting to wash. Tough odors may require more than one Whammy treatment.
When the Whammy is done, it can be laundered and can now be reused in your kitchen and around your home for other cleaning purposes!! Buy more than one Whammy and save a few bucks! It's a great way to try all 3 formulas. FREE SHIPPING, too!
Grammy's Whammy is patent-pending.
