MULLET SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
The origin of the mullet  is determined by its name, for it is a corruption of the French
word molette, which means a spur-rowel. The mullet,  piercand unpierced, is a
charge very frequently met with in the heraldry of all countries, and as such has no
particular meaning, but it is also used as a mark of cadency to indicate the arms of a
third son. The shield which is depicted is the coat of arms of a number of families
named Day, and is blazoned "per chevron or and azure, three mullets counterchanged."
